Tritons Split With Panthers in Saturday Softball Action

OWENSBORO, KY. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split a doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Tritons lost game one 3-1 before taking the second game 4-3.

The Panthers’ Katy Lee delivered a home run off junior Allyson DeFosset for the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh in the opener.

DeFosset pitched six and two-thirds innings in the loss, giving up just four hits. She also struck out five and walked just two.

The Tritons scored in the first inning for a 1-0 lead when junior Megan Riggs crossed the plate after junior Kelly Essner was thrown out at first on a strikeout.

Kentucky Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game before UMSL scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings for the win.

Seniors Jessica Keim and Casey Dierkes both recorded RBI singles in the sixth, while senior Alex Ogle scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and freshman Ja Cee Ellis doubled to score Riggs for the final score.

Freshman Crystal Koehler earned the win, while DeFosset picked up the save.

Ellis finished the game with three hits, while Riggs and Keim each collected two.

UMSL now stands at 18-20 overall, including 9-9 in the GLVC, while Kentucky Wesleyan is 11-29, including 5-15 in the league.

The Tritons return to action tomorrow at Southern Indiana in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
