Williams' Run in Eighth Lifts Tritons Past USI

EVANSVILLE, IND. – Senior Cole Williams scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, sending the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team to a 6-5 victory at Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The run by Williams broke a 5-5 tie and improves UMSL’s ledger to 17-23, including 11-15 in the GLVC. Southern Indiana falls to 33-15, 21-6 in the league.

Junior Steve Porter went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while senior Ryan Ayers went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Senior Scott Lavelock also had a pair of hits.

UMSL took a 4-1 lead after three innings, but saw the Screaming Eagles tie the ball game at 4-4 with a three-run fifth inning. Both teams tacked on another run in the seventh inning before the Tritons’ unearned game-winner in the eighth.

Junior Seth Cockrum picked up the win on the mound, working two and two-thirds innings. He allowed one run on three hits and fanned three. Senior Kyle Hargis got the start, going four and a third innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits.

UMSL returns to action Tuesday at Missouri S&T in a make-up game.
