ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team lost a 7-6 decision to cross-town rival Saint Louis University Tuesday night at The Billiken Sports Center.
UMSL falls to 15-21 on the season, while the NCAA Division I SLU improves to 18-20.
The Billikens scored four runs on four hits in the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. UMSL countered with four runs on four hits in the second inning to tie the score.
Senior Mark Sanders singled through the right side, scoring senior John Kalb who doubled to left center to lead off the inning. Senior Ryan Ayers then singled to right field, scoring senior Nico Gregali before a sacrifice fly by junior Andy Ford scored Sanders. Senior Scott Lavelock followed with another sacrifice fly to score Ayers.
The Billikens added single runs in the third and fourth innings before Lavelock tallied his second RBI of the night with a double to left field, scoring Ford, to make the score 6-5.
SLU tacked on one more run in the eighth before a home run by Ayers to lead off the ninth resulted in the final score.
Sophomore J.C. Schute took the loss on the mound for UMSL, giving up five runs on eight hits in three innings.
Ayers and Lavelock each recorded two hits and two RBIs, while Sanders had two hits
SLU out-hit UMSL, 16-9.
The Tritons return to action Friday at Southern Indiana in the first game of a four-game series. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
