Baseball Drops Pair at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, MO. – Thomas McCormick hit a two-run double to right center in the bottom of the ninth, helping Missouri S&T rally from one-run deficit en route to a 6-5 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Miners then won the second game, 5-1.

Junior Seth Cockrum took the loss in opener, pitching two and one third innings in relief. Senior Brady Decker started the game on the mound, giving up three runs – none of which were earned - on six hits.

UMSL scored once in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Miners put three runs on the board in the fourth inning for a 3-1 lead. UMSL added two runs each in the fifth and seventh innings for a 5-3 lead. Missouri S&T added to their total with a single run in the eighth before McCormick’s shot in the ninth.

Senior Steve Porter went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored, while senior Scott Lavelock was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Nico Gregali recorded two hits and two runs, while senior Mark Sanders connected for his first home run of the season and finished with two RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Linds Prestia took the loss in the second game, giving up four runs on five hits in two innings of work. The Miners scored twice in the second inning and added another pair of runs in the third inning. UMSL scored its lone run in the third inning when senior Ryan Ayers doubled to left center scoring Gregali.

Missouri S&T's Brian Rickert and Danny Trenner combined to hold UMSL to just two hits.

The Tritons now stand at 11-18 overall, including 6-11 in the GLVC. Missouri S&T improves to 13-17 and 7-10 in the league.

UMSL returns to action tomorrow, hosting Bellarmine at 1 p.m. at TR Hughes Ballpark.
