Dan King is entering his eighth season in 2008 as head coach for the UMSL men's soccer program and is the fourth head coach in the storied history of the Tritons soccer program.

He has produced a record of 48-67-13 while at UMSL and has led the Tritons to three Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournaments during that time.

During the 2006 season, King directed the squad to a 9-7-2 record, the most wins for the team since the 2002 season. The nine wins that season matched his best record since coming to UMSL in 2001. The Tritons also reached the first round of the GLVC Tournament during the 2006 season.

King also recorded nine wins in 2002, guiding UMSL to a 9-7-2 record and a berth in the league tourney. For his efforts, he was named GLVC Coach of the Year. King again led the Tritons to a bid in the conference tournament the following year in 2003.

Prior to coming to UMSL, King served as the head coach at Florissant Valley Community College, a position he held since the 1998 season. He has also served as the director of coaching for the local Cougar Soccer Club since 1992. His coaching career began at his alma mater, Indiana University, when he served as an assistant for legendary head coach Jerry Yeagley from 1984-1986. While with the Hoosiers staff, he was the defensive coordinator and assisted in the recruiting of players from the St. Louis area. King still spends time as a coordinator and coach at the Indiana University Soccer Camps. He graduated from IU with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.

King was a collegiate student-athlete at Indiana University from 1981-84 where he played for Coach Yeagley. While with the Hoosiers, he helped the team advance to the national championship game each of his four years. King was a member of the back-to-back national championship teams in 1982 and 1983, the first two of the seven national titles in the school's history. In addition, the team finished runner-ups in the national title game in both 1981 and 1984. During that time period, the Hoosiers set an NCAA record that still stands with a 46-game unbeaten streak from 1983 through 1984. In the 1983 season, King earned Big Ten MVP honors, and in high school he was a Parade High School All-American in 1979 and a member of the Junior National Soccer Team in 1978.

King and his wife, Rhea, have two daughters and live in Florissant.

Pat Shelton | Assistant Men's Soccer Coach

P: 314-516-5750

Pat Shelton is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Tritons. Shelton played two seasons for UMSL, both under Coach King.

Shelton played in 2001, which was Dan King’s first season at the helm, and 2002 where UMSL posted a 9-7-2 record, which is tied for the best overall record along with the 2006 season, since King has been with the UMSL program. During that season he helped the Tritons to a 7-2-1 conference record, which stands as the best finish since UMSL joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference. That year, Shelton earned All-GLVC Second Team and All-Region honors as a defender. He started in all 30 games played during his career.

Prior to coming to UMSL, Shelton played two seasons at Florissant Valley Community College both under King, earning all-region honors both of those years. He played his high school soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy under Coach Vince Drake where he won two state titles and earned all-conference, all-state and all-metro honors his junior and senior years.

Shelton graduated from UMSL with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in the summer of 2003 and works at Shelton Industrial Pattern in the Aerospace industry.
