UMSL ATHLETIC TIMELINE

1966-67
Men's basketball and men's tennis begin competing at the NAIA level.
1967-68
Men's cross country and men's golf programs are added.
1968-69
Baseball and men's soccer programs are added.
1969-70
Missouri-St. Louis moves to the NCAA Division II level.
1971-72
Men's swimming and wrestling are added, bringing the total number of Missouri-St. Louis sports to eight.
1973-74
Men's soccer wins the school's first, and only, NCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory over Cal-State Fullerton.
1974-75
Missouri-St. Louis adds four women's programs: basketball, field hockey, tennis and volleyball.
*Note: Several women's teams competed prior to 1974-75. However, that was the first year the women's sports programs received official recognition.
1975-76
Softball program is added, bringing the total number of sports to 13 (eight men's teams, five women's teams).
1977-78
Women's swimming program is added.
1980-81
Missouri-St. Louis joins the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
1981-82
The athletic department eliminates the sports of wrestling and women's field hockey.
Women's soccer program is added.
1982-83
Men's cross country program is eliminated.
1995-96
Missouri St. Louis begins competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Men's and women's swimming programs are eliminated.
1997-98
Women's golf program is added, bringing the total number of sports to 11 (six women's, five men's), which represents its current status.
June 2001
UMSL Sports Hall of Fame is created and holds inaugural ceremony by inducting 12 members as the first class into the Sports Hall of Fame.
